Can a Christian lose his salvation?

First, we should define the term “Christian”. A Christian is a person who heard the good news of Jesus Christ, has accepted him as their Lord and savior, confessed him with his mouth, believes in his heart, has had an experience with him, follows his teachings, has a personal relationship with Him and continues to believe throughout their life. There are people who simply walk down the aisle and said a brief prayer regarding Jesus or were raised in a Christian family. This does not make a person a Christian.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16 KJV

And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. Acts 16:31 KJV

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:9-10 KJV

* New Creation *

A Christian is a new creation. They do not appear different physically but an internal change has occurred. God the Father, Jesus and the Spirit of God has come to live inside the believer. He has been made to be the temple of the living God.

Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. John 14:23 KJV

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 1 Corinthians 6:19 KJV

* Redeemed *

A Christian has been redeemed. They were purchased for a debt that was owed. Jesus paid the debt that was owed with his own blood and through his death.

Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: Galatians 3:13 KJV

* Justified *

A Christian is justified. He has been made right with God as if he never sinned. He has also been declared righteous when they receive Jesus as their Savior and through the Word of God we are taught righteousness.

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: Romans 5:1 KJV

For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:10 KJV

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 2 Timothy 3:16 KJV

* Eternal Life *

A Christian is promised eternal life. This does not begin after a Christian dies but the moment he accepts Jesus into his life. The way to experience eternal life now is by having a personal relationship with him. Knowing him intimately is the key.

And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. John 17:3 KJV

* Holy Spirit *

A Christian is marked by God and sealed with the Holy Spirit. The moment he accepts Jesus into his/her life he is sealed with a promise as part of his inheritance. He/she is considered to be a co-heir with Christ.

In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Ephesians 1:13 KJV

And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. Romans 8:17 KJV

A Christian has been made promises and they are written in the Word of God. Our job is to stay faithful and continue to seek him daily. Our relationship with him is so important. We cannot lose our salvation but we have certain things the Lord has asked us to do on our journey with him throughout our lives. There are baby Christians, someone new in the faith and there are mature Christians, someone who walks and fellowships with the Lord and knows His ways.

* Personal Relationship *

And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. John 17:3 KJV

We, as Christians, need to know God and Jesus. This means we need to have a personal relationship with him. If you have a close, tight relationship with the Lord there is no way you will think you are losing your salvation. You know in your heart without a doubt he will never leave you nor forsake you.

Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. Hebrews 11:5 KJV

If you notice or make an intent observation, the person who thinks this way (meaning they will lose their salvation) has several criteria that fits them. He is usually a new convert, is not familiar with his word and teachings, is one who thinks sin can separate them at any moment or that their promise of an eternal dwelling with God depends on how good he/she is.

In conclusion, we can see this way of thinking comes from a lack of knowledge of God’s word because one can recognize it through our own maturity in the scriptures and knowledge of his love. The apostle Peter teaches us that grace and peace are multiplied to us through the knowledge of God and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, 2 Peter 1:2 KJV

Through our understanding of God’s word we experience more of God’s power working in our lives, as well as having more peace on a daily basis because you know who you are in Christ. Christians do not lose their salvation it is gift.
