An Adulterous Generation Pt 1

The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven. He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times? A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed. ~ Matthew 16:1-4 KJV

If you haven’t already noticed Jesus is blunt! He tells it like it is. I know that people can tend to beat around the bush because many of us are concerned with the way the person we are speaking to will receive what is being said to them. The truth is not always comfortable but it is necessary to share.

So today we are going to address the topic of “an adulterous generation”. When we read “adulterous” the first thing that comes to mind is a woman or man having intimate relations with another who is not their spouse. This is an action that is considered of the flesh. You feel something and you act on it to satisfy it’s desire. But when we read this in the Word of God it isn’t always referring to a sexual act. There are spiritual connotations that we must look at as well.

God is a spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. ~ John 4:24 KJV

The Bible is spiritual. There are natural connotations and there are spiritual aspects too. Later we will review some scriptures in the book of Revelation to dive deeper in to the word and understand more spiritual meanings.

Jesus told us to love God first and love your neighbor as yourself. We must have God in first place of our lives. He is the one we run to first no matter what. He is the breath of life in us and without him we are nothing. When we have a relationship with Him He is first.

Now when we put other things infront of him we make God second. That “other thing” can be your children, your spouse, TV, your best friend and much more. When we do this Jesus sees it as “spiritual adultery”. You are no longer committed to your first love and have made other things more important. God’s wisdom, comfort and security become second to some other person or object. So when Jesus said a wicked and adulterous generation to the Pharisees and Sadduccees he was telling them that God is not number one in their lives. They could see signs in the weather and know what the next day would look like but they could not see the signs that the son of God was doing to show and prove he was from God.

Next we’ll look at some scriptures in Revelation that further explain an adulterous generation in part 2. Although this was not explaining scripture in the Book of Revelation we will do so in part 2.
